6. Halo 5: Guardians
343 Industries had the unenviable task of taking the reigns once Bungie left after their impeccable run on the original Halo trilogy, and as such, Halo 4 was received with quite the lukewarm reception. However, with Guardians, they've made the series their own, remixing the core combat in substantially different ways and establishing Guardians as the first true step in the next generation of Halo titles. What does that mean? Well, ground-pounds, slides, in-air hovering and universal down-sights aiming for every gun, to name but four. There's also a very cool new mode called Warzone that acts as a hybrid between MMORPG area-control and tried n' true Halo matchmaking, producing something that - although it does feature optional micro-transactions - is a great new addition that breathes new life into everything that's gone beforehand. Sadly, the impeccable Halo gameplay only goes so far, and that's what stops this taking a top five spot. The story portion of Guardians is completely lacking, barely tying into its Master Chief vs. Spartan Locke premise, instead seeing the two tussle one time, before a real enemy is revealed for the long run. Don't let that put you off though, you can tell 343 know exactly which parts of the age-old formula need sprucing up, and they've done so with the utmost care and attention.
