20 Best Video Games Of 2016

12. Pokémon GO

Qualifying Pokémon GO is a bit of a tough one, but let's sidestep the fact Niantic blew their own foot off by removing the Tracking feature from the game (the thing you needed to play it), and instead focus on the fact that 'PoGo' was easily the game of 2016.

There's literally never been such a cultural movement around a game before, let alone a mobile app, and that's before you factor in the simple-yet-fun game mechanics, population of our own world with various Pokémon (something fans have dreamed about for decades) and the actual feeling of being a Pokémon trainer.

As Niantic mapped various real-world locations to in-world Gyms you could battle at and claim, you genuinely saw people go out of their way to make a mark on their local area, ranking up and catching more impressive monsters, just to fend off ever-challenging competition.

Pokémon GO was nothing short of a phenomenon, and even if its gameplay amounted to swipes and frantic tapping to defeat your enemies, there's an inherent quality in everything it accomplished that can't go unrewarded.
