17. A Plague Tale: Innocence

An early contender for the shiniest hidden gem of 2019, A Plague Tale feels like one of those titles that elevates the "indie label" into new, far more visible heights.

Developed by Asobo Studio as their first major new IP after years of contract work, you play as Amicia de Rune, a young girl looking after her brother Hugo in 1300s France, as her estate undergoes an English invasion.

Twinning real-world history with a supernatural onslaught of rats, the crowd tech literally swarms your view at every turn. Puzzles, stealth and light combat spice up the rest of the adventure, and in a very Last of Us or Logan-style way, this "protector story" is one for the ages.
