20 Best Video Games Of The Generation (So Far)
15. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
It is a damn good thing that MGS V plays as well as it does, because thanks to behind-the-scenes fallouts between creator Hideo Kojima and company Konami themselves, the lack of a focused story, deleted final mission and gaping plot holes makes for something that is easily the best-playing third-person action game of all time... with one of the weirdest and ultimately most pointless stories of all time, too.
Let's stick to the positives though, as in taking the franchise into a proper open-world mould, Kojima looked at MGS' inherent experimental nature (playing with enemy guard patterns, shooting parts of the environment and exploring to find a variety of ways to infiltrate) and blew it out to a stupendous degree.
Alongside a basic feel of movement that feels responsive and intuitive, is this feeling that you can poke and prod at every aspect of the world, just to see what'll happen. Shoot electrical cables to shock the guards underneath, roll an explosive barrel down a hill, interrogate a guard to find a weapons cache and then use your findings to a blow a hole through the remainder. Research invisible cloaking devices, airlift tanks directly out the battlefield, ride supply crates into the sky yourself for an extraction - we all have no.idea how many hours were put into play-testing MGS V, but the end product is hyper-detailed beyond belief.
