Over time it emerged this controversial ad was actually created without Sony's approval, as agency BBDO Chile were using it to enter an advertising competition.
Still, it didn't stop people royally losing their minds over all the associated imagery. It's still a confusing image, with a modern-day gamer supporting a Nazi soldier; despite the fact that the officer in question, Erwin Rommel, actually refused to torture Jewish prisoners and aided in a plot to kill Hitler.
So like... helping a friend defeat a boss battle? Very strange.
