20 Essential N64 Games You Must Play Before You Die

18. Bomberman 64

Hudson Soft

Before Hudson Soft came up with the terrifically awful idea of trying to rewrite the Bomberman series as being a more mature and 'gritty' experience with Bomberman: Act Zero (If you go and Wiki it after reading this, on your head be it) and systematically putting the franchise in an early grave, Bomberman was a B-grade video game icon, only trailing behind the likes of Mario and Sonic.

It's now been years since we've had a return to the classic, cutesy origins of the series, and that's a shame, because games like Bomberman 64 serve as a reminder to just how fantastically fun a simple premise like hurling bombs at people (in video games, mind) can be.

Anyway, Bomberman 64. It's an excellent game, not least because of its successful attempt at giving the series a story mode that sees the little Destructions Expert zoom around the galaxy in order to find and blow up the bad guys.

Oh, it has a kick-ass four-player arena multiplayer mode that directly recalls the format of the originals too. Heaven.
