20 Most Frustratingly Difficult Video Game Levels Of All Time

9. The Water Temple (The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time)

The Water Temple may sound like a nice weekend spa retreat, but for the many Zelda fans worldwide it is a phrase which stirs up feelings of hatred, frustration and disappointment. Situated across four floors, this labyrinthine dungeon combines deviously placed keys, puzzles and dastardly enemies to give gamers a nice challenge. This plan backfired, and one of the major criticisms of the otherwise flawless game was how meandering and ridiculously difficult the Water Temple was. Expert Zelda players have reported struggling with the dungeon even after multiple play throughs €“ thankfully Nintendo would tone it down for the 3DS reboot, though the scars remained for N64 and GameCube players. Aside from being deviously tricky to complete, the sheer size of the area makes completing the Water Temple a tall order and this wasn€™t even the final mission of the game! The Water Temple was followed shortly after by the Shadow Temple which was extremely tough in its own right. Being constantly forced to change the water level while equipping and un-equipping your Iron Boots quickly became something which haunted the sleep of gamers trying to complete the level for the first time. Never again, Nintendo. WhatCulture Tip: Utilise Farore€™s Wind where appropriate €“ this eliminates the need for arduous backtracking.
