16. Slippery Climb - Level 20 (Crash Bandicoot)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vURG1cJT0JY Crash Bandicoot the little red fox with the big attitude is a platformer which is quite rightly loved by people of all ages. Its controls are easy to master yet deeply satisfying, allowing more or less anybody to pick up and play. That being said, Crash Bandicoot is game that was primarily marketed at younger audiences. Indeed, when the original game came crashing onto consoles way back in 1996, there was already a plethora of games aimed at more mature audiences seeking a more demanding experience (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Dino Crisis to name a few) so the game was developed by Naughty Dog to cleverly fill the gap of family game. Surely, a family game should be relatively simple throughout so everyone even Grandma Patricia can play, right? Well, the games twentieth level was enough to completely ruin, scupper and destroy these plans on its own. A level surely spawned in hell, Slippery Climb was something that required an unholy amount of skill and timing. The stage is comprised of a sadistic abundance of moving platforms, spikes, birds, staircases (where the steps disappear and make a slope) and mad scientists. This made for extremely frustrating gameplay each jump had to be weighed, measured and timed to perfection and even if you made that one, there seemed to always be one more to go. To make it all that bit more enraging, theres only one checkpoint in the entire level so if you die youre either sent back to the start or to the checkpoint. Despite being a family game, we have our doubts as to whether any child could complete this level without either some outside assistance or copious amounts of luck. WhatCulture Tip: Dont rush, plan every move, always take into consideration the next move and get your timing down. Keep a rag nearby for the inevitable sweat.
