20 Great Video Games That Everybody Turned Against
7. Grand Theft Auto Online (2013)
Rockstar have been under hella pressure the last few years, suffering from the weight of Grand Theft Auto VI – a game that no-one has played, but is perpetually on the minds, tongues and fingertips of gamers everywhere. Delay after delay has passed, as the studio tinkers with the game while trying to maintain their most active revenue source: GTA Online. And, on that side of things, gamers have been largely satisfied.
The online component of Grand Theft Auto V, GTA Online launched in 2013, and has spent the last thirteen years (!) with massive player numbers and ongoing updates, support, DLC – the works. New stories, new players, new games, and a consistently enhanced gaming experience have made it one of the most long-lasting online games of all time, and yet somehow they almost broke it back in 2018.
The After Hours update introduced the Pegassi Oppressor Mk II to the game: a hover bike with access to homing rockets and explosive weaponry. This shifted the entire balance and long-established limits of gameplay, allowing players to jet up and down the map at will, with extreme lethality. Playing with it felt like a cheat code, especially on long-distance jobs, and playing against it was nigh-impossible, with non-Mk II players finding it all but impossible to counter or avoid its attacks or game dominance.
