20 Greatest Sci-Fi Video Games Of All-Time

5. Mass Effect 3

The final installment in the Mass Effect trilogy is a triumph in all aspects except one €“ the ending. If we ignore the ending and focus on the game itself there is much to be adored about this last foray into the expansive galaxy of the Mass Effect games, with its many enthralling planets, aliens and the SSV Normandy. For a start, the gameplay mechanics were improved from Mass Effect 2 and the firefights felt much smoother. The story is as immersive as ever with many loose ends being tied up. Mass Effect 3 isn€™t short of tough decisions where your choices in the previous games come back to haunt you. We also bid a fond farewell to some of our favourite ex-squadmates and friends (yes, friends) like the eccentric Mordin Solus and the assassin Thane in some particularly heartbreaking moments. Mass Effect 3 also introduced us to some very addictive multiplayer action, adding another string to its already formidable bow. The only thing which really lets Mass Effect 3 down is its ending. Many people felt it was rushed and after a series that focused so much on moral dilemmas and choices, it felt like it completely ignored our previous decisions. While the ending was distinctly lackluster, you have to give BioWare some credit for releasing a free €˜extended cut€™ for people to download which added further to the game€™s disappointing ending.
