There's times when Dark Souls' dank, dark and gloomy atmosphere can become so oppressive that it literally becomes hard to continue as you descend ever deeper into the recesses of its hellish world.

Ruined townships, infested sewers and fetid swamps are the only unwelcoming locales that await you on your journey to put Lord Gwyn to rest, or so you're led to believe.

You all no doubt recall your agonising first attempts at reaching the peak of Sen's Fortress and toppling the Iron Golem (or letting Iron Tarkus do it for you), only to be greeted with a crumbled archway with seemingly no way to progress. Oh, how lovely.

But then you're hoisted up into the clouds by a demon and blinded by that thing that Solaire has been searching for for god know's how long. Your first glimpse of Anor Londo drenched in the welcoming, warm light of the sun isn't just gorgeous in its own right, but provides the perfect contrast to your experiences up to that point in the game.

Terrific.
