20 Most Important Gaming Deaths This Decade

4. Lee Everett - The Walking Dead: Season One (2012)

The emotional lynch-pin of Telltale Games' brilliant graphic adventure series has been the relationship between player character Lee Everett and Clementine, a young girl who is desperately trying to find her parents. Over the course of the five episodes, the pair develop a clear father-daughter bond, which of course makes it pretty clear that something horrible is probably going to happen to one of them. Late in the day, Lee wakes up to find Clem missing, and in the ensuing search for her, ends up being bitten by a walker. At the end of the game, it's up to the player to decide their own fate; they can ask Clem to shoot them before they turn, or they can allow themselves to turn while telling Clem to leave the scene. It's one of the toughest recent dilemmas in a game, and if you're not quick enough deciding, the game will simply decide for you on the basis of the decisions you've made so far. Either way, the Lee we knew is gone, and as the first season of the game comes to an end, Clem is left wandering the wilderness.
