Eli Vance is (or rather, was) easily one of the most likeable characters in the Half-Life series. Introduced in Half-Life 2, Eli has a tragic back story, where his own wife Azian died in the Black Mesa incident of the first game, and so he is extremely protective over his daughter Alyx. He also has a strong relationship with protagonist Gordon Freeman, and makes amusing hints to Alyx about their potential romantic involvement. However, he finally bites the big one at the end of Half-Life: Episode Two, being killed by an Advisor as both Alyx and Gordon look on, unable to help. As if the sight of Alyx weeping over her father's corpse isn't a depressing enough ending to a game, we're still waiting for a resolution to this, as 6 and a half years later, Half-Life: Episode Three has yet to follow. Eli's death is clearly a crucial turning point in the story, but in typical Valve fashion, their aversion to the number three continues, and fans are left continually twiddling their thumbs without any information about a concluding chapter.
