15. Final Fantasy VII Was Almost An N64 Exclusive

Though Final Fantasy VII is inextricably entwined with the original PlayStation, things almost worked out differently.

Square Enix actually began developing the game in 1994 for the SNES, but when they decided to switch from 2D to 3D, the publisher had two paths ahead - the Nintendo 64 or the PlayStation.

And so, they set about producing a test for the N64, which generated a low framerate and, combined with the increasing costs of manufacturing cartridges, prompted Square Enix to pick the PlayStation instead.
