20 Mind-Blowing Things You Didn't Know About Grand Theft Auto 3

8. 9/11 Changes To The Game

GTA 3 20 Years
Rockstar

Grand Theft Auto 3 originally released on 22nd October, 2001. That's just weeks after the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.

In response to the atrocities, Rockstar scrambled to make some minor changes to the game before its release to ensure it was respectful of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.

In the original build of GTA 3, the Liberty City police cars were almost identical to traditional NYPD cop cars. They were changed in this revised version.

A plane present in a mission also had its flight path changed, to ensure it didn't look like it was flying close to a skyscraper.

A further mission with reference to terrorists was also cut from the game, alongside a couple of lines of pedestrian dialogue and a segment of the talk radio station.

The original GTA 3 US game box cover was redesigned too.
