16. Silent Hill 2 (2001) -€“ James' Revelation

The Moment: In Silent Hill 2 you play as James Sunderland, a man who came to Silent Hill in an attempt to try and discover more about some letters he had received from his wife, Mary. Sounds normal, right? Well, not when Mary had died a few years previously from a sudden bout of illness.

After searching through the town for clues we eventually discover a video tape showing James killing his wife. The letter from Mary then disappears and it becomes apparent that the monsters in Silent Hill are there to punish James for his previous crimes.

How Is It Powerful? Because you had become accustomed to playing as the good guy, this revelation is particularly shocking and powerful. James murdered the wife he had been searching for. The guilt bought James to Silent Hill to be punished, just like Angela and Eddie, who you meet during the game. With such a complex and compelling story, there really is no wonder the game makes an appearance on this list.
