20 PS2 Games That Prove It's The Best Console Ever

9. God Of War II

Devil May Cry might be an outstanding action game, but God of War ate its lunch not once, not twice, but all three times in a row.

Now, where the third game went a bit too far down the rabbit hole of "gruff macho protagonist butchers everything in his path" (to the point where Kratos was jamming slaves into gear cogs to solve puzzles), GoW II is an exemplary sample of pure hack n' slash gameplay, twinned with memorable spectacle and a production budget to match.

Building on every combo and ability of Kratos' from the first game, you could tell Sony Santa Monica were only becoming better with the core PS2 hardware. It resulted in an opening level that doubles as a jaw-dropping boss fight, some extremely impressive and detailed levels, and a main character that literally tears his way through the game, one demon at a time.

God of War just feels great to play, and though 2018's reboot took the franchise in a completely different direction, this is still very much worth revisiting.
