20 PS2 Games That Prove It's The Best Console Ever

7. Silent Hill 2

GTA: San Andreas Follow the train
Konami

Even now, Silent Hill 2 is one of the scariest games you can play. Oozing with atmosphere and a crippling sense of dread, the sequel to the PS1 survival-horror classic bettered its predecessor in every single way, from the surreal, metaphor-heavy plot to the terrifying monsters haunting the corridors of 'the other world'.

While the scripted scares are terrifying, it's the simple act of exploration (especially early on) that's most affecting. The disjointed environment of Silent Hill itself is almost dreamlike in nature, meaning just finding your bearings - all the while shadows pass by door frames and monsters await your presence in the next room - can lead to some brilliant, unscripted moments of pure unease.

The story itself, while initially vague and abstract, eventually comes into focus as one of the best of the entire generation as well. A couple instalments which came after were still pretty good, but the series peaked at this pitch-perfect sequel.
