11. La Quimera

Reburn

There was some scattered excitement for La Quimera considering the unfortunate lack of single-player FPS campaigns these days, all the more so as the story was co-created by auteur filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn.

But the gameplay trailers didn't highlight anything even remotely special about the game, which appeared to be drawing aesthetic and gameplay cues from the PS360 era, with its muddy colour palette and relentlessly bullet sponge-y enemies.

La Quimera's production has also been tumultuous, having been developed by Ukrainian outfit Reburn with all the obvious challenges that entails, as well as being reverted to an early access launch shortly before release.

And so, while La Quimera's brief-but-repetitive campaign might scratch the nostalgic itch for those craving some cheesy, 2010-era shooter gameplay, it doesn't bring anything fresh or interesting to the table to help it stand out.

It's competent to a point, but also familiar enough to feel tired in every fiber of its DNA.
