20 Scariest Video Games Of All-Time

8. Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2
Capcom

Resident Evil 2 expanded the setting when it came time for a sequel to Resident Evil, allowing players to leave the confines of the game's titular "Resident" and throwing them headfirst into a city on the brink of collapse - a city infested with all the nightmarish creatures inherent to the first game (and many that weren't).

The result wasn't quite as claustrophobic, but many die hard fans will cite Resident Evil 2 as the best and most accomplished game in the franchise, as well as the most consistently scary. Playing as either Clare Redfield or as Leon S. Kennedy, your mission is to fight your way out of the infamous Raccoon City as the T-Virus spread amongst its inhabitants.

Most will remember that the scariest part of this game was encountering the "Lickers," terrifying lizard-like creatures that crawled on the walls and ceilings, and used their tongues to strangle and decapitate their targets. Fun and frantic as it was, then, it's impossible to look back on Resident Evil 2 without experiencing a pained lump in your throat.
