20 Severely Underrated 90s Video Games You Forgot You Loved

14. Gain Ground - Mega Drive/Genesis, 1991

If Doom was called 'Shoot Demons', or FIFA was called 'Kick Ball Into Goal', then it's unlikely that those games would've got much attention. Perhaps that's why Gain Ground was largely forgotten - a deceptively strategic action game in which you and up to two buddies must get through top-down, single-screen arenas filled with unpredictable enemies. The game starts off in the dark ages, then moves through time all the way to the future, so weapons get more advanced and playable characters evolve from using bows-and-arrows to laser guns. The intrigue of what era you'll be in next, the co-op gameplay, and raw difficulty of the game make it compulsively replayable. Gain Ground an unforgiving, one-shot death affair, so meticulous planning and understanding of enemy's movement patterns is essential. But Gain Ground has had something of a revival recently, thanks to a trend for retro and retro-style games. It's part of the Sega Mega Drive Collection, available for PC and consoles, and it can also be purchased stand-alone on Steam. Its uniquely tactical gameplay makes it well worth revisiting.
