20 Severely Underrated Video Games From The 2000s

12. Manhunt

Manhunt's the kind of game you simply could not explain away if your parent, friend or significant other walked into the room and caught you gleefully cheering as your digital avatar sliced an enemy's head off without sounding like an aspiring Hannibal Lecter. Rockstar's never been one to shy away from the controversial, and Manhunt features quite possibly their most disturbing premise yet. Placing you in the shoes of convicted murderer, James Earl Cash (rule of thumb, kiddies: three names means the dude's hiding some skeletons), Manhunt tasks you with stealthing across a sequence of levels while racking up a kill count for the pleasure of your captor, known simply as the "The Director". The controversy surrounding this little bundle of digitised violence was downright astronomical, and it's easy to forget that there's actually a damn good game buried underneath the furore, but Rockstar's left-turn into horror was truly one of the genre's best. Nothing was quite as terrifying as crouching mere inches from your hunters' faces as they stalked past the dark corner you'd taken refuge in. Manhunt was survival horror at it's purest, and the fear of being found and gutted dogged your every step. With the Amnesias and Outlasts of the world it's easy to overlook Rockstar's horror masterpiece, but it's certainly not wise.
