20 Things Only 30-Something Gamers Will Understand
13. The Neo-Geo Was A Myth
In the early 90s everybody knew how to spell it but hardly anybody had seen one.
The Neo-Geo is the stuff of teenage myth and legend. In Japan it was originally hired out to hotels and businesses but as the gaming industry hit its stride SNK could practically smell the money coming in, which is no wonder why it barely made an appearance in the UK.
Both the hardware and the games came at a premium with titles easily selling for £100 or more, after all this was arcade quality in the bedroom, which put it beyond the reach of most gamers whose parents weren't filthy rich.
An extortionately high-price point meant its killer graphics and fancy foreign titles were mere pipe dreams for kids who were busy scraping pennies together to make the jump from 8-bit to 16-bit.
The consoles have largely held their value with NTSC-J models selling on eBay for well-over £250 and that is why the Neo-Geo was (and to this day remains) the Lost Ark of all games consoles.
