Like many contemporary video games, Alien: Isolation utilises a crafting system for players to build various tools to help them survive against the alien and the other threats encountered during the course of the game.

In an effort to ramp up the game's tension even further than it already was, the items needed to craft invaluable items like medkits or EMP mines are set to spawn in locations randomly.

Consequently, this meant that players wouldn't know where to go if they were looking for particular items, raising the stakes as the alien could turn up at any moment. Making every playthrough different, the intent behind this decision was to encourage players to explore locations more carefully to find every valuable resource they could get their hands on.
