20 Things You Didn't Know About Rocket League
17. It Was Almost A Free-To-Play Game
Though Rocket League was ultimately released first on the PS4 as part of Sony's Instant Game Collection - making it "free" for PlayStation Plus members - Psyonix nearly went another route entirely.
An earlier plan was to have the game release as a free-to-play title not dissimilar to Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2, with revenue generated through microtransactions for advantageous unlockables.
In the end, the company smartly decided that microtransactions would only be used for cosmetic items and the core gameplay would be fixed no matter what a player was driving.
Though F2P games can of course be enormously successful, charging a (very reasonable) entry fee certainly hasn't harmed Rocket League's success any.
