11. This War Of Mine

From one carefree headshot-a-thon to the complete opposite - something where every bullet matters, alongside where you're pointing said gun, and if you even have a firearm handy at all.

See, This War of Mine - and particularly, expansion pack The Little Ones - is one hell of a bleak game.

Developers 11 bit Studios state their inspiration was 1992's Siege of Sarajevo, and it's a realistic point of context as rather than play a soldier like everything else, you play a group of civilians attempting to survive, following the harrowing events of a battle. You can literally apply TWOM's setup to the aftermath of any shooter, and doing so reframes the destruction and devastation we usually tend to revel in when it comes to the genre.

At any moment, will you break into some potentially innocent person's house to steal supplies? Attempt to craft a weapon so you can defend yourself? Procure some items and get ready to barter your way past an encounter, turn away survivors, leave less people at home base and risk a break-in - but gather more for the coming days?

This War of Mine has a way of really gut-punching you with the harsh realities of what people must go through attempting to forge a living in any war-torn environment when there's no hope in sight, and 11 bit Studios must be commended for that.
