20 Unlucky Moments That TOTALLY Ruin Your Game

1. Not Noticing The Phasmid - Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is an RPG heavily driven by its narrative. The experience of roleplaying as the most broken cop in Revachol is so brilliantly written that even when you fail a dice roll, the narrative consequences of your action are usually so funny or impactful that it feels like something that was supposed to happen anyway.

The only exception is the one dice roll in the game’s finale.

Obvious spoiler alert ahead: the ending of Disco Elysium is one of the most magical and touching moments in gaming history. Upon arresting the deserter responsible for the death of the hanged mercenary, you come across the Insulindian Phasmid—an insectoid cryptid with psychic powers.

The entire game you hear rumors about the cryptid's existence but no solid proof, so when the creature suddenly appears in the ending and it starts talking to you about the real miracle not being itself but rather the messy experiment that is humanity, the interaction is enough to make a grown man cry.

However, here’s the catch. To interact with the Phasmid, you have to succeed on a roll to spot it. The roll is deliberately easy to pass but not impossible to fail, meaning that those who roll a critical failure on the check may not spot the Phasmid and completely miss out on this amazing interaction.

A moment of silence for those unlucky few.
