When Atomic Heart was nearing release, it was smothered with hype, promising to fill the gap that BioShock’s absence had left in many a digital library. It had a stunningly realised world, set in a fascinating alternative 1955 USSR full of sci-fi robots and utopian design - things looked very promising…

Then it was released to a mixed reception. While several aspects paid off - namely the design, environments, and slick gun combat - it faltered when it came to its crass protagonist, lukewarm plotline, and average boss fights. Regardless, the potential was there for a follow-up to stick the landing, as it had so much going for it.

Earlier this year, many were ecstatic to officially hear that a sequel was in the works, with developer Mundfish fully committed to making it bigger and better than the original. Expansive environments, inventive traversal, and a more ambitious, bizarre narrative have all been revealed, marking significant progress in the right direction. This could be the payoff we were waiting for…

All that potential and renewed excitement could still be for naught, though, when it comes to the midpoint of next year - what are gamers going to choose: a franchise with potential that stumbled on its first entry, or the bona fide game event of the decade? The choice is nonexistent, so Mundfish would be wise to steer clear of 2026 in its entirety or face the consequences.
