20 Video Game Side Quests That BROKE You

Almost every quest in Disco Elysium ends cynically, as its melancholic setting is dripping with a sense of post-industrial collapse and poverty-riddled struggle - curse you, capitalism. That said, there's one particular side mission that really hits home in a way you won't expect. 

Disco Elysium has you playing as Harry Du Bois, an unstable detective investigating a murder. You start the game after a drug-induced bender, having lost your gun, which you now need to find. After searching around, you'll eventually learn that someone by the name of The Pigs has it. So, time to retrieve your firearm. 

This encounter is bizarre to say the least, as you find that The Pigs is a deranged older woman who has convinced herself that she's a cop. Getting the gun back isn't too challenging, but what really stings is her reaction once it's gone. You discover that this poor woman's delusions are the result of intense loneliness and dementia, after being left behind by her children.

You can even find more information revealing that this woman, formerly called Auntie LaPlante, was known for helping out struggling kids in the area, making her horrid fate all the more painful. What's worse is that you can't do anything yourself to help her.
