20 Video Game Villains You Never Realised Got The Last Laugh
11. Darko Brevic - Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV isn’t only a crime simulator. Beneath the story of Niko Bellic’s rise to the top of Liberty City’s criminal world, the game also tells the gruesome tale of his revenge.
And let’s just say that unlike Niko’s success as a hired killer, this one doesn’t end pretty.
One of Niko’s major reasons for coming to America was to track down Darko Brevic, his former squad member from the army who betrayed his unit and caused the deaths of all of Niko’s friends.
Most of the errands the Serbian does for Liberty City’s gangs are actually to find Darko, but when Niko eventually confronts him, it turns out that revenge doesn’t taste sweet at all.
By the point Niko comes across his nemesis, Darko is already a broken drug addict and practically begs Niko to kill him. The man even laughs at his former comrade, admitting he let everyone die for a mere $1,000 and that Niko isn’t really different from him killing people for the mob.
At this point you can either shoot Darko or let him go, but no matter what happens, Niko ends up feeling empty and miserable, further cementing that Darko’s actions broke him beyond any repair.
