20 Video Game Villains You Never Realised Got The Last Laugh
2. Maxwell - Don't Starve
Maxwell is the enigmatic tall man that serves as the antagonist of the survival game Don’t Starve. He’s responsible for trapping all of the playable characters in his own twisted world, where he observes their struggles against the elements and terrifying monsters for his own amusement.
Since Maxwell is in control of the dimension he created, it may seem like there’s no way of beating him, but the Adventure Mode that you can access via a special gate in the world actually allows you to confront him and even defeat him if you make it through all of its five chapters.
Or so the game would have you believe.
In the final chapter of Adventure Mode, you gain access to Maxwell’s throne room, from which he controls the world. The man is protected by a shadowy shield, but you can remove it by placing the Diving Rod into the Nightmare Lock next to the throne, which will cause Maxwell to fall to his knees and immediately disintegrate.
Now, you’d think this would mean you won. However, it then turns out Maxwell was actually trapped in the room by the magic he was trying to control, and by removing him from the throne, you’ve actually replaced him as the new prisoner of the Constant, while he’s free to roam the world.
Well, it’s on you if you fell for it.
