20 Video Games That Mock You For Failing The Tutorial
11. Somehow You've Died - FTL: Faster Than Light
FTL: Faster Than Light is the sci-fi-themed roguelike strategy game that will drag you through hell and back.
To reach your goal of defeating the rebel army, your spaceship's crew will have to battle some really tough opponents and unforgiving random events, and even the slightest mistake can cost you the entire campaign.
Luckily, the game's tutorial is a lot more forgiving... But not necessarily less punishing for those who somehow mess it up anyway.
The intro to FTL is a step-by-step learning experience that is almost impossible to fail. Each step is carefully explained, and the final mock battle features an enemy ship that cannot even penetrate your shield.
It actually takes effort to find a way to lose the tutorial (such as by deliberately turning off all oxygen on the ship and suffocating your crew), which is why if your ship is destroyed, FTL will mock you for it by giving you a special game over that says, "Somehow you've died during the introduction training exercise. Feel free to try again, but this doesn't bode well for your mission."
Never has there ever been a more loaded use of the word "somehow." You can practically hear the condescending tone through the screen.
