11. Resident Evil 2

The original Resident Evil might have had atmosphere in spades and one of the greatest enemy-reveals of all time with the slow-turning zombie, but when you look back on it, it's far too easy to forget the godawful dialogue and extremely cumbersome controls. Instead, although I'm personally a bit partial to the nightmarish Nemesis baying at your heels in RE3, it's really this second instalment that gave us the most iconic elements of the franchise, alongside refined gameplay and polished graphics from such a primitive first instalment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psocOySFePA From the Lickers to the 'dog scare'-aping murder of crows barreling their way through a window, this middle instalment nailed the horror elements of the series whilst balancing just enough action set-pieces to really establish one hell of an identity going forward.
