That's right, though many may feel that Tekken isn't massively relevant as a franchise in 2016, it was still pretty disheartening to see it take a step away from tradition by hurling a QTE into the mix.

Though we have no idea how heavily Quick Time Events will play into the gameplay, the fact that Bandai Namco weren't shy about showing it off during a trailer featuring Heichachi and Akuma suggests that it could be a prominent new mechanic. Otherwise, why include it at all?

It could be that whoever "wins" a QTE contest at the start of each fight gains some sort of offensive advantage, but whatever the end result, it's been rightly met with suspicion and derision from fans.
