With MGS 2's plot twist taking the bandana-wearing cake for ridiculousness, and Bioshock nailing the most historic, AC II's is easily the most fun and direct - with almost everyone on the receiving end exclaiming the exact same sentiment as character Desmond at the time...
"What. The. F**k"
The series has always played with multiple timelines at once, and back in the original trilogy - with the help of series creator Patrice Desilets - it kept itself completely believable within its own fiction. We knew the modern day versions of the Templars and Assassin's were still vying for control of essentially the world, and we knew there was talk of a 'First Civilisation', as if the very modern world we live in could've cyclically happened thousands of years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C7Qp3va1NY It was gripping stuff, so come the point where near the end of the game where (as Desmond) we see Italian Renaissance-man Ezio come face to face with a mysterious alien entity (named Minerva), her then directly addressing us in the modern time was mind-blowing. Suddenly the tables were turned and the past could directly influence the present - all bets were off as to how the story was going to go. Sadly Des didn't turn into some past life-conjuring super-badass with multiple assassins' worth of abilities, but that doesn't change the fact that when Assassin's Creed was on form, it was absolutely unbeatable.
