25 Best Sega Games Of All Time - RANKED

5. Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Yakuza game
Sega

It's amazing to think, but Sonic 2 was the first game in the series to introduce Sonic's iconic spin-dash move.

If you go back and play the first game, not having access to the spin-dash can be really jarring, as it's become a staple of basically every Sonic game released since.

That, of course, is just one of the many, many innovations and improvements that Sonic 2 brought to the table compared to the first game. This is a sleeker sequel, with eye-popping level design, catchy tunes, fantastic bosses and a bizarre fox who follows you around and dies all the time.

It's also a much faster game than the first one. Sonic is all about speed, so Sonic's abilities were enhanced, allowing him to move much faster than in the original.

This one also has so many memorable levels. Highlights include the Infamous Chemical Plant Zone and its deadly pink water, Oil Ocean Zone with its industrial backdrop and even an adventure on Tails' biplane in the Sky Chase Zone.

Amazingly, Sonic 2 was meant to the first game in the series to feature a time travel mechanic; this was then repurposed for use at a later date when Sonic CD was made!
