Forget the recently-announced FF VII remake, what you need is right here. Final Fantasy VII's outdated, blocky-as-all-hell graphics should never be tossed away or forgotten, they're to be cherished and embraced like a loveable quilt of nostalgia you'll never get tired of. Square are almost definitely going to mess up the remake by giving a character the 'wrong' voice, removing the materia system or gutting the turn-based combat system altogether, but for any fans of the original work that never minded it looking like a Lego diorama come to life, Final Fantasy VII is just as welcoming and worth escaping into today, as it ever was. There's a damn good reason this is commonly cited as not only one of the greatest games of the 90s, but of all time, and it's for an endless amount of reasons you'll discover as soon as you dive in. From the nuanced conversations you'll have with one of the best casts of characters in any FF game (just edging VI and IX to the top), a visually-arresting world that's infinitely fun to explore, and an emotional moment that'll stick with you forever when everything converges for the big finale - Final Fantasy VII earns every bit of its stance at the top of the RPG pile.
