25 Greatest Musical Tracks From The Halo Series

12. Devils... Monsters... - Halo: Combat Evolved

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=BkYuO9W5dQ4 "Devils... Monsters...". Wow, how much creepier can it get than this? As a kid, I never expected Halo: Combat Evolved to be scary. I only expected an action game with guns and explosions. But I got more than I bargained for, indeed. When a certain level began, and any big Halo fan knows what I'm referring to, things took a complete turn for the worst, and turned the whole game around with a newer, much deadlier enemy than the Covenant. A parasite which slumbered for millions of years, lying dormant until awakened, was released, laying waste to everything it touched and turning the unfortunate into their own. Soon, humans fought mutated humans and aliens fought mutated aliens. It was a bloodbath. And for the Flood, what I just described doesn't even come close to the actual thing. Not only did their inception into the game frighten me, but the audio to which was associated with their presence was even more creepier. "Devils... Monsters..." is perhaps the most nerve-rattling because of its bizarre sound effects and organic-like intonations that struck deepest. It's played at various points in Halo: Combat Evolved whenever the Flood were present, and added that intense factor that was never in the game previously. While the Covenant had their share of specific themes and sounds, the Flood were given their own very exclusive theme that merged with everything else, often times eclipsing them. It reflected on how big of a threat they were in the game, and things progressively got worse and worse from there. To me, "Devils... Monsters..." is one of the more recognizable tracks from the game as it shows the importance of the plot twist that is the Flood. They were such a serious turning point for not just Halo, but video games in general. Bungie went out of their way to make something more than just a straight-up human vs. alien story, and opted to create something on a much grander scale. It's what some like to call "zombies in space", and it fits naturally. As does the satisfying, yet creepy, audio.
