6. A Walk In The Woods - Halo: Combat Evolved
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=P51ssp4GZRM One of the greatest things about playing Halo: Combat Evolved as a child was exploring the vast environments and admiring all the subtle details that went into making them. Voyaging into a Forerunner structure and wandering down these intricately constructed hallways added a huge science fiction component that really sold the presentation. But what made is truly memorable in the grand scheme of things was a distinct tune from the soundtrack named "A Walk In The Woods". It played a couple of times I believe throughout the campaign, but when it did it was when the player is making his/her way through the mysterious confines of Forerunner construction. And the naturalism of its sound when playing was nothing short of fantastic. "A Walk In The Woods" is by all means one of Halo's grandest pieces of audio. It's dignified by it's adventurous sound that seems like you're walking down a corridor full of lights, gadgets, and other gizmos that flicker and interact with each other. Because of that imagery, it gives the track some symmetry in its layout by starting off with a tantalizing chorus and steady stream of guitar notes that slowly but progressively advance from one higher note to the next, increasing its pace as the players walk down those isolated but beautifully mysterious alien corridors. It also takes a break from the hectic action and suspense and is more like a half-time period to explore and learn more about the environment you're fighting on and study the grandeur of it all in the process. O'Donnell and Salvatori covered it to a brief point in Halo 2, but it wasn't as mesmerizing as it was the first time. The originals are always better, and "A Walk In The Wood" stands as one of the very few Halo tracks that are so good that it actually needed a cover to it later in the series. At least that's how I see it.
