Demon’s Souls - the action role-playing game - is the antithesis to a traditional power-fantasy, the player kept at a substantial disadvantage from the very beginning, forced to contend with countless enemies and colossal bosses, most of which are remarkably better equipped, as well as generally more tenacious. It's about scraping through each situation, narrowly avoiding death as you gradually progress towards an objective, most of which are seemingly out of reach.

The Japanese cover art understands this core component of the series perfectly, depicting a knight fallen in battle, either deceased or physically exhausted to the point of incapacitation, collapsed on the ground, covered in arrows. By comparison, the North American version (shown below) - while completely acceptable - depicts the protagonist as a force to be reckoned with, as opposed to a minuscule cog in a much larger machine.
