25 Most Iconic Video Game Characters Of All Time

12. Ryu & Ken

Yes, I'm well aware that I come off as a colossal hypocrite for featuring Ryu and Ken in a single entry when I left Sub-Zero out in the cold in favour of Scorpion, but the situation here is vastly different. Ryu and Ken share equal ownership of the 'lead character' title, and without one - you can't have the other. Sure, Sub-Zero is pretty recognisable as far as Mortal Kombat goes, but on the wider stage of iconic characters, he's nowhere near the level of one of gaming's greatest duos. The two martial artists are brothers in all but blood, share a great deal of history and live for the thrill of the fight. And yet, the two of them couldn't have more polar opposite personalities. Ryu prefers silence and calm thought over brashness, and Ken exists to chastise his best friend for not showing more emotion and extroverted happiness for each fight that he emerges victorious from. But it's okay if best friends don't have the exact same strengths and weaknesses. What one lacks, the other has in droves; Ryu and Ken will always be pushing each other to their respective limits to reach perfection.
