18. Dragon Quest VIII

A truly exemplary RPG, Dragon Quest's eighth instalment once again featured Dragon Ball Z artist Akira Toriyama's artwork and designs, used to greater effect than ever when fleshing out an already gorgeous mythology.

In doing so, this 'kitchen sink' approach to the aesthetics extended to game design, where turn-based battling was accompanied by crafting, a hugely detailed set of cities and even a Pokémon-style minigame where you could capture, train and battle all sorts of monsters.

There's more going on in DQ VIII than a handful of other RPGs combined, and the fact that ever action is aided by one of the nicest visual presentations in the history of the medium, is just icing on the cake.
