2K Games has officially announced that Mauro Ranallo and Jerry 'King' Lawler will be the commentary team in their upcoming WWE Battlegrounds video game.

The development team revealed the news via YouTube, and are calling this a commentary "Clash Of The Eras". It'll be NXT play-by-play man Mauro's first taste of the WWE gaming world, and it's a return to action for long-time SmackDown/2K series announcer Lawler.

Some fans on social media seem torn over the importance of Battlegrounds, but there's little doubt Ranallo's animated delivery style will suit the game's over-the-top action. He should blend well with his old SmackDown cohort Lawler too.

Battlegrounds is a spin off from the main 2K franchise. It favours arcade gameplay over the simulation style typically found in 2K's games, and it promises to be very kid-friendly with pick-up-and-play controls and a cartoonish presentation.

2K clearly wanted a new voice for the game, but thought Lawler would be a nice companion for Ranallo and appeal to old-school fans who might be sitting on the fence.

The game will release on 18 September for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows and Google Stadia.
