4 Real Life Inspirations for the Mario Universe (and 1 Myth)

Much has been written of the fact that Magic Mushrooms are reportedly based on Lewis Carrol€™s classic Alice€™s Adventures in Wonderland. This is actually a myth, which Miyamoto later corrected, saying that the Magic Mushrooms in Super Mario Land were actually inspired by the popular idea of mushrooms as gateways into another world, which recurs throughout history, and of which Alice is only an example. Exactly where humanity would have gotten the idea that eating certain types of mushrooms can make you experience crazy things and travel to other universes, we leave up to the reader.
