5 Cancelled Fallout Video Games You Never Knew Existed

4. Fallout Online - PC (2007)

Shortly after Bethesda bought the rights to the Fallout IP, former publisher Interplay decided to go ahead and make an MMORPG set in the Fallout universe. Yes, that was a legally dodgy move, and yes, it did result a big old lawsuit being filed by Bethesda, who claimed that Interplay had no right to make the game. Fallout Online was to feature characters and locations from the Fallout universe that Bethesda claimed conflicted with the mythos they were creating for Fallout 3 at the time. Looking at the images, Fallout Online would've looked like a slightly worse version of the murky-brown Fallout: New Vegas. By the time it was cancelled, Interplay had mapped out around 65,500 sq miles of the world. There would be a settlement-building mechanic, in which players could create and run their own towns (sound familiar to anyone following Fallout 4?). It was also going to feature item crafting and guilds, but no more was revealed about the doomed project. After several years of legal scuffling, Bethesda finally bought the rights to Fallout Online for a paltry $2 million. This technically means that Bethesda may one day make a Fallout Online MMO, but it won't be based on any of the work done on the Interplay version of the game. Bethesda's interest in the MMO genre is evident in The Elder Scrolls Online, so it's not out of the question that we may one day see this grand vision become a reality.
