5. Counter Strike
Youre probably scoffing at this. Counter Strike on the original half life engine? Its outdated, surely!? Thats the thought I had when loading it up to rekindle some fond memories but after a few rounds of de_dust2 I was hooked again. Its a different beast altogether if you try to compare it with todays heavy hitters such as Call of Duty or Battlefield, but Counter Strike requires a different kind of skill and patience to get any sort of reward. A simple game of planting or defusing a bomb is spiced up with the ability to buy various weapons and equipment for your determined soldier or demented terrorist. You lose then your money dwindles, making that final kill with your pistol even more enjoyable as you know whats at stake. Still played religiously today, many people say Counter Strike peaked at 1.6 and has never been improved upon despite a few attempts to bring it up to speed over the years, mainly graphically. The best COD players would be decimated in a Counter Strike game as the lone wolf approach rarely succeeds, not unless youve been honing you skills on the servers since 1999. This is exactly what I experienced, over and over again but I found each death an enjoyable escapade that played out as a tense riddled moment from a horror film. I know someone is around the corner; its just a matter of when they plan to jump out, and how their accuracy is. No kill streak rewards or UAV planes to aid your attack, this is all out tactful war that still holds the excitement and tense encounters after all these years.
