Too often in games the player will find himself surrounded by a horde of zombies which are happy to just stand around and rub shoulders with you. Yes, I'm looking at you Dead Rising. This couldn't be further from the case in DayZ, where your very footsteps are enough to attract the zombies in your proximity, which will proceed to charge at you, clawing and biting. A recent update has made the flesh-eaters even quicker, making them reminiscent of Danny Boyle's zombie-esque creatures in '28 Days Later'. Though they can normally be dropped with a single shot, if the zombies catch you they are easily capable of killing your character or wounding him to a point where he will quickly bleed out if he isn't bandaged.
