5. Kinect
Right, none of you care about the Kinect, right? So you don't really care that the Xbox One is going to ship with one and always require it plugged in? Cool. Moving on. I can't just finish there? Fine. Microsoft have always been way more excited about the Kinect than just about anyone I have ever met. I actually don't hate the Kinect but I do think that it is also less intuitive than a normal controller. I find using my body makes me feel less immersed in an experience and that no one has really cracked how to use the technology. Although, I concede it could happen and it could have a decent application. While I think it is a little bit of a niggle to need the Kinect plugged in to have the Xbox One work, the fact that we will be getting one straight out the box makes it just that. A niggle. I also have to confess that I thought the application of the voice control and navigating the Xbox was one of the highlights of the show. I do actually believe it will work as seamlessly as advertised and I do think it will be a nifty feature. It is not a console seller, and it is little more than 'cute', but I have to say, it is nice to see the upgraded Kinect used in a more practical and subtle way, rather than just having us be the controller. So that is a mark to Microsoft. Even if I expect a large portion of the 15 exclusive games, 8 of which are new IPs, to be revealed as Kinect games at E3 that demand you be the controller. I am preempting having to take that mark away.
