5 Overlooked Gaming Gems Of This Generation

4. Mirror's Edge

Mirrors Edge Before you get all uppity and morph into power geek anger rangers, Mirror's Edge wasn't the commercial success you and me wanted it to be. Sure, the game was adored by critics, obsessed with by the fans and re-posted to death by armchair warriors on Reddit, but it has been tremendously overlooked compared to other titles. A stylish first person parkour-focused title, Mirror's Edge really attempted to stand out on the gaming plateau when it was released at the tail-end of 2008. The fact that the game looked and felt so different is probably a factor into why it scared off many gamers, who are all too comfortable with their other first-person franchises. Mirror's Edge has to be applauded for its originality and the execution of the idea, and is therefore a great example of a fantastic game being swept under the counter in the current generation. Developed by Battlefield lords, DICE, and published by the Devil himself, EA, Mirror's Edge was a breath of fresh air for the gaming community, but the majority of which have yet to inhale the refreshing entertainment it possesses. Set in a dystopian future, you play as Faith, a runner as they're known in game, with a talent for the discipline of Parkour. Faith can leap, slide, wall run and manipulate the environment with her momentum in ways that have not been seen in a first-person action title, that is until the reboot climbs its way onto the next batch of incoming consoles. The action flows perfectly when you're partaking in hand to hand combat, and actually equipping a gun slows the whole experience down. Faith's sister has been set up for murder, and it is up to her to jump, climb and shimmy her way across buildings to clear her name, and it is a joy to do so. In a recent IGN interview with former DICE CEO, Patrick Soderlund, he said that despite the weak profits of Mirror's Edge, the team at DICE are "just as passionate about the series as the fans" and that the reboot currently in development was the brainchild of producer Sara Jansson who pitched an idea that they "couldn't resist" Currently, all is well for the future of Mirror's Edge, but if you haven't done so already, do yourself a favour and go pick this bargain up. I can assure you, you won't regret it.
