4. The Different Strains

So there's this virus, right... ...and somewhere along the way it all gets, well, complicated to say the least. It seemed for a while that Resident Evil wasn't even about zombies anymore. Leon Kennedy's romp in rural Spain revealed a strange cult of zombie-esque super creatures called Las Plagas that were as far from traditional zombies as they could possibly be. They had tentacles and wielded chainsaws and all sorts of other threatening but ultimately silly things. Although it was top notch survival horror, it didn't really feel like Resident Evil. Likewise with Resident Evil 5 which transported the same sort of beasties to Africa. It seemed Capcom felt that they had to jack up the fear factor in every iteration, and had decided that zombies weren't scary. Now it's hard not to agree that zombies as a device aren't very threatening in themselves. It falls to the environment and story to make them scary. Just look at The Walking Dead, zombies are damn scary. Oh, and while we're on the subject of things that aren't zombies...
